Pick your five favorite TV shows (in no particular order) and answer the following questions. Don't cheat!
Hmm . . .
1) The Middleman
2) Eureka
3) Real Ghostbusters
4) Doctor Who
5) Firefly
(yes, I know it's all genre, shut up)
01. Who's your favourite character in Eureka? Douglas Fargo. He's a good dollop of cute wrapped around a huge helping of intelligent wrapped around a core of pain. He's a scheming, sycophantic beta male who flatters, schemes, and whines because going directly for what he wants never got him anywhere in life. In short, while I do have buttons he doesn't press, I'm having a hard time coming up with them.
02. Who's your least favourite character in The Middleman? Probably the title character. He's Lawful Good verging on Lawful Stupid - except when he's decided someone is fully on the side of evil, when he's willing and ready to resort to torture. Not so good. And he occasionaly has weird (although not usually blatantly sexist) ideas about women. Still, he redeems himself often enough that I kept watching.
03. What's your favourite episode of Doctor Who? My all-time favorite is "Seeds of Doom." Couldn't tell you why, exactly; objectively, it's not that great an episode, and the giant cthulhoid plant dies in the end. There's just something fun about the interplay between the Doctor and Sarah Jane in this episode, and the one-shot characters are engagingly nutty.
04. What's your favourite series of Firefly? Easy enough; there was only the one.
05. What is your favourite ship in Real Ghostbusters? It'd be easier to answer what I don't ship. If I'm totally honest with myself, it's probably Peter/Egon, but then I have to qualify that by saying that I don't mean that to exclude the possibilities of Peter/Egon/Ray and/or Peter/Egon/Janine, and really I just kind of ship all of the main human characters in one big world-saving OT5. (One Big Happy Firehouse?) Oh, and plain old Egon/Janine is good, too. Man, my multishipper slip is showing.
06. What is your antiship in Eureka? There aren't any ships - canon or fan-favorite - that I absolutely can't stand. Having said that, I'm annoyed that the show seems to be hell-bent for Carter/Blake by any means necessary. I kind of like that as a complicated friendship more than an uncomplicated romance. (I liked the Carter/Blake/Stark triangle quite a bit.)
07. How long have you watched The Middleman? Oh, you had to ask me that for that one, did you? I think
bassfingers turned us on to it last spring or early summer, but I could be totally spacing that.
08. How did you become interested in Real Ghostbusters? Loved the movie, wanted more about the characters, was only eleven at the time so that was all the motive needed. Well, that and it was one of the few things in the modern fantasy/horror genre with faint occultish vibes that my parents would let me watch. It being animated seemed to de-fang it, much as the original movie being a comedy-horror meant that Dad was okay with my watching it and Mom didn't get it together to object.
09. Who's your favourite actor/actress in Doctor Who? Tom Baker. He's still my Doctor.
10. Which do you prefer: series 1 of Eureka or Doctor Who? I haven't ever seen series 1 of DW. In point of fact, I've seen remarkably little of the First Doctor.
11. Which show have you seen more episodes of, Middleman or Real Ghostbusters? The latter, seeing as how it has more episodes by more than an order of magnitude.
12. If you could be anyone from Doctor Who, who would you be? Reasonably well-thought out answer: probably Martha. She got through the process of being turned into a hero with her psyche mostly unscathed, and still believes in the Doctor without needing him. Gut answer: Captain Jack.
13. How would you kill off your favourite character in Middleman? Oh, to do that I have to decide whether my favorite character is Noser or Wendy. Let's go with Wendy. She discovers the truth about her father, which gives her the courage to make that suicidal dive into the overloading nuclear reactor to shut it off and keep it from forming the black hole that would swallow the world. The Middleman and Lacey arrive just a moment too late to save her, but she passes her last words of wisdom and her (platonic, really we mean it) love to them before expiring.
Then she finds herself in the lobby of the Underworld, facing the filing guy again.
14. Give a random quote from Middleman? "No more monologuing, or I'll Swiss-cheese you on principle."
15. What's your favourite set or location on Eureka? (#15 had disappeared from the version I saw. I'm making a wild-assed guess as to what it might have been, because it allows me to give this answer.) S.A.R.A.H. On some shows, the sets and scenery are just about characters; here, she really is one.
16. Would a Real Ghostbusters / Doctor Who crossover work? It's been written before. I'll probably write it myself, at some point. And reversing the polarity of the [particle] flow seems to fix an awful lot of things in both universes.
17. Pair two characters in Middleman that would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple. Noser/Tyler. Both musicians, both serious about their art but remarkably laid-back, and capable of carrying on great conversations.
18. Has Firefly inspired you in any way? I wouldn't say inspired, exactly, but that it's a well-liked SF show that has a cast with almost as many female characters as male, none of which are Mary Sues, is deeply heartening.
19. Overall, which show has a better cast, Eureka or Doctor Who? Oooh, toughie. They've both had their share of transcendent moments of acting awesomeness, and their fair share of clunker moments of stinky line delivery, too. Man. I think I have to give it to DW, but only because it's run so long there have been so many more cast members, so the number of really good performers is higher. (If I were restricting this to just new-series Who, I'd have given it to Eureka.)
20. Which has better theme music, Real Ghostbusters or Firefly? Another toughie, but really, RGB gets the nod because it stole its theme song from the movie, and you can't go wrong with that song.
