Something that I posted less than 24 hours ago now has my eighth-largest number of kudos on AO3 and the fourth-largest number of comments. Everything that has a higher comment number was a Yuletide gifts.

I've never been on a fandom wave when it was rolling before. This is an interesting ride.

(It's here if you're curious. Good Omens, Established relationship Ineffable Spouses but the ship isn't the point, Warlock is stuck in Texas and his parents don't understand him. Nothing big but do read the warnings.)

Top 5 Stories By Hits:
Not For Sale (Firefly, Mal/Simon, Porn Battle IX): 7416
Programs and Users Have a Common Descent (Tron x Eureka, gen, Sci-Fi Fantasy Big Bang 2011): 3919
Bar the Door (Firefly, Jayne/Simon): 2618
Visions of Futures Passed (Star Trek (2009 movie), Bones/Spock Prime, Porn Battle IX): 2478
Spun Right Round (Eureka x Buckaroo Banzai, gen, Sci-Fi Fantasy Big Bang 2009): 2283

The next story is another Mal/Simon fic; nothing else has over 2000.

Top 5 Stories By Kudos:
Not For Sale (Firefly, Mal/Simon, Porn Battle IX): 306
Endless Beat (Singin' In The Rain, Cosmo/Don/Kathy, Springkink 2010): 176
Grist For the Rumor Mill (Singin' In The Rain, Cosmo/Don): 171
Visions of Futures Passed (Star Trek (2009 movie), Bones/Spock Prime, Porn Battle IX): 142
Good Vibes (Ghostbusters (1984 movie), Egon/Ray, SmallFandomFest Round 5): 127

Two repeats - not surprising, given that higher views mean more potential for kudos. Shoutout to the SitR fandom; there aren't a lot of fics, even fewer that aren't AU, and they are appreciative of the ones they get.

Oh, hey, my lone Transformers fic, good to see you here. Otherwise, three repeats and another GB entry.

What almost all of these have in common is that they're old - all but one of these are from 2008-2010, and the exception is 2011. So they've had more time to build up hit counts and everything else that comes with them. Several of these are from larger fandoms (Firefly & Trek, in particular) than I normally write for. I'm a little surprised that the entries for what is still by a nontrivial margin my largest writing fandom are both GB rather than RGB, but I suppose any RGB fics with an M or higher rating are potential childhood-ruiners.

I haven't uploaded anything yet this year. I should try and fix that.

I am vaguely contemplating attempting Yuletide this year, after skipping it two years in a row.

Mostly this is because I think Atop the 4th Wall, by itself, is eligible if it isn't crossed over with Channel Awesome more generally.

I don't know when I think I will have the time to write. I'm head writer for Mythos Houston's Owlcon game again this year, and I know how much time and energy that sucks up. Then again, not having to wait on other people is likely to make that less stressful even if it's the same amount of writing time overall, and a chunk of that will fall after the Yuletide deadline anyway.

On the gripping hand, I don't know how many people in my social circle will have major medical crises between now and then, either.

I technically have two more report days plus the graduation ceremony, but for all practical purposes I'm pretty much finished with grading - there's just the requisite end-of-year paperwork to do, and getting everything stored away for summer.

It's a good batch of kids we're graduating this year. Should be a nice ceremony.

My brain is already overflowing with plot bunnies to write. I have banged out just under 2500 words on a fic I didn't even think of until yesterday, with two other WIPs open and glaring at me. *sigh*

My being exhausted all this week has meant that I have gotten barely any writing done. I got the last two scenes of the Big Bang fic that I'd already finished fleshed out, but the less plotty, more smutty one is only half done.

Well, I say half done. It is in terms of word count for the Bang. In terms of eventual story length, I'm guessing this is currently closer to a quarter, possibly a fifth, of the total word count.

Sometime in the next few months, we gonna have us some smut, I tell you what.

*looks at the Yuletide tag set*

. . . I don't think I'm doing Yuletide this year.

Probably just as well; I don't know if I'll have free time in November. But disappointing all the same.

I probably will do [community profile] fandom_stocking, although I don't know how many GB/RGB, Monkees, and/or TGWTG/CA folks it really has, and I'm not really doing much writing outside those three fandoms right now. Eh, I can probably get it together to write a few DW or MCU flashfics, at least.
omorka: (Default)
End of first draft: 29,000 words in 66 pages.

And it never gets shorter in editing, no matter how much I try.

Oh, lawd.
omorka: (Default)
On the writing front, this goofy thing is at just over 20,000 words, and I have four and a half scenes plus the epilogue to go.

And for the first time in a long time, I really want/need a beta. Not because I doubt my writing, but because this is a large and sprawling fandom, and I just can't watch all of it. It's been a long time since I started ficcing on a canon I wasn't up to date on. Given how flexible canon is in this universe, that's not as bad as it might sound, but it's still enough for me to need another pair of eyes from the same fandom. Too bad I don't know anyone there yet.
omorka: (Default)
I have eight scenes from the outline out of an original 14 left to go, and I'm at 12,000 words. If this isn't a novella it'll be very close to it.
omorka: (Default)
I just wrote an outline for a story idea in an unfamiliar fandom, and it's two and a half pages long. I cannot write short form to save my life.

1: Pick five fandoms. List them in alphabetical order.
2: Visit this site for a random poem. Write down the 5th line (yes, even if it's an E.E. Cummings poem and you wind up with an apostrophe). Repeat five times and -- you guessed it -- list the lines in alphabetical order! (No cheating, mind! This is a challenge and it's always been about creativity.)
3: Write a very quick 50-word half-drabble for each fandom (try to do it all in one sitting -- make your brain explode!), using the line from the poem as a prompt. You don't have to include it in the half-drabble -- it's just inspiration.
4: Bravo! Have a cookie.

So here are my four:

For Yuletide proper, my assignment was for Eureka, Jack/Zane slash. And I said "I can do zat!," even though it's not a pairing I really would have thought about before. The result was He's A Runaway, which ended up (a) more as pre-slash than as slash, (b) a bit short of novelette length, and (c) with a slightly goofy subplot involving Deputy Andy. And Fargo wanders through the beginning and end of the fic in his role as Director of GD.

I wrote two treats, both in fandoms I'd never tried before. The more successful of the two is a short Boat That Rocked (Pirate Radio) backstory fic for On-The-Hour John, News And Weather, Or Not. I enjoyed writing in this universe, and I love that character, but I probably need to rewatch the canon before trying it again.

The other one turned out awfully cracky. Issues With The Sound is a Misfits of Science x Still Crazy crossover, with an RGB reference thrown in at the end for good measure. The basic question is: what would happen if an RGB-style banshee showed up at the opening show of Johnny B's comeback tour? And the association of lightning with an outdoor concert meant that Strange Fruit just sort of had to show up, and . . . yeah. I was sleep-deprived when I wrote this, but I can't claim I didn't know what I was doing, so I'll just shut up now.

And I realized around the time the Yuletide archive opened that no one had written any GB/RGB, which clearly had to be fixed, so I searched around for a prompt and found a cute Egon one. I whipped up Purely For Science more or less on the spur of the moment - it's a brief encounter between Egon and Slimer, in the movieverse post-GB2.

I'll add them to my personal fic journal later today, when I get the time. For the moment, I need to get started on the Hoppin' John, or we'll be eating after 8:30.

Ganked from several people, most recently [livejournal.com profile] calliopes_pen:

I have a list of 15 characters which you will not see until the answers are posted. Give me wacky questions in the form of "3 and 8 are trapped in a cave-in; how do they survive?" and I'll try come up with wacky answers.

Just to mix things up a bit, they're from 15 different fandoms, although I've written at least one story in each fandom listed.
