So yesterday a group of us watched all three LotR:EE movies, back to back to back. It was an interesting experience, at least in that we got to see certain aspect of performance and style evolve. (And the fact that Legolas is Captain Obvious is much more apparent this way.)
A couple of observations:
1) There is an "OMFG I'm On Fire Goddammit!" moment in each of the three movies - one of the Ringwraiths in FotR, an Ent in TTT, and Denethor in RotK. In each case, the being who is set on fire does precisely the wrong thing: take off running. (Of course, in the first case, it doesn't really matter, I suppose.) In the first and last case, the being who is set on fire promptly runs off of a prominence for no obvious reason. I suppose Ents are smarter than either wraiths or stewards . . . at least as far as fire safety is concerned.
2) There is a moment in each movie when a major character is drawn up out of mortal peril by another major character: Sam is drawn from the Water by Frodo at the end of FotR, Frodo is drawn from the Water by Gollum in TTT, and Frodo is drawn from the Fire by Sam at the end of RotK. I find the elemental symbolism here interesting, especially as it relates to the image of the Ring being drawn from the Earth (well, okay, technically mud) by Deagol that appears in the prologues of movies 1 and 3. (In Tolkien in general, Water is the element least contaminated by Morgoth, followed by Air, Fire, and Earth, roughly in that order as far as I can tell.)
